New Delhi | Saturday, Nov 21 2009 IST

Humlog fame Sushma Seth and herbal queen Shehnaz Hussain were today honoured with Priyadarshini Awards for being flagbearers of the women empowerment movement.

Giving away the awards, Minister of State for Women & Child Development Krishna Tirath said women have the power to change the world.

Prominent among those who were awarded inclused Congress general secretary Mohsina Kidwai, social activists Vimla Mahajan and Dr Kapila Vatsayan. Accepting the award, Ms Kidwai said women need determination and self belief for empowerment, which is not possible without education.

The event was organised by the Guild for Service, an NGO. The Guild for Service organises mass wedding function for the downtrodden people every year on the occasion of Indira Gandhi's birth anniversary. Around 20 couples from lower strata of society, different castes and religion were also married off today.

Guild for Service president Mohini Giri said, ''We have conducted thousands of such marriages to bring about a change in the society.'' Saying that women should not be considered as second rate citizens, Ms Giri said the present gathering of women are the role model for new generation. All the women must learn from these ladies who have earned respect and success in their respective fields, she said.

''Fifty per cent reservation in Gram Panchayat is not satisfactory. We want 33 per cent representation in Parliament, she added.
