Indefinite strike brings works at HPL's supermax project to halt
Kolkata | Saturday, Nov 21 2009 IST

Work at the supermax project at Haldia Petrochemcals (HPL) came to a halt today following an indefinite strike by about 1,500 contract workers.

Company authorities said in a statement the strike notice was served in the course of conciliation proceedings towards settlement of Chartered of Demand between HPL and HPL Contractors' Workers Union held in presence of the Additional Labour Commissioner yesterday.

'' The ongoing work for implementation of Project Supermax has thus come to a halt at the moment, '' it said. Sureswar Manna, vice-president of the CITU-backed Haldia Petrochemicals Servicing and Maintenance Contract Workers' Union, said the strike was being observed to press for wage revision and increase in allowances, among other things.

'' Yesterday and the day before, we had a tripartite meeting and we were about to clinch an agreement. But the management refused to strike the deal leaving us with no other option but to go for a strike, '' he said.

He also alleged that the rival workers' union of the Trinamool Congress had brought people from outside to frustrate the strike.

The HPL plant was in the state of a 75-day shutdown, effected since October 30, for synchronisation of the supermax project to raise the capacity of the country's largest naptha-based petrochemicals project to 6.7 lakh ton from 5.2 lakh ton per annum.

HPL had decided to set up the supermax project in 2006 with a target commissioning by October 2007, but later the company shelved it. However, the company revived the expansion plan and work resumed soon after.
