India Railway to seek grant from Centre for socially important projects
Railway Minister Mamata Banerjee today said the railway will seek a one time grant from the Central Government to implement various socially important projects. This will be for a 2020 vision document that the railway will present to Parliament soon, she said. Ms Banerjee was speaking at a function of the Western and Central Railway in which for the first time in the country a 15 car suburban train was flagged off. Later, she told newspersons that the quantum of the grant would be decided after a discussion with the Planning Commission. She said the railways will approach various state governments, including Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra and Karnataka, whicih are already participating in various programmes, for such socially relevant projects. She said the railways will also take up a study for linking Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus and Churchgate either through under ground or overhead links. This will reduce the commuting time considerably, besides increasing the passenger capacity, the minister said. Ms Banerjee also inaugurated a ladies special for the suburban line, besides the Bandra-Jodhpur Weekly Express, the Mumbai-Veraval Link Express and the midtown Dadar Station. -- (UNI) -- 21BY15.xml
