IWF to decide on India's fate after dope cases are closed
New Delhi | Saturday, Nov 21 2009 IST

The International Weightlifting Federation (IWH) will wait for all the pending cases of the six dope-tainted Indian lifters to be 'closed' before the it takes a final call on the sanctions to be imposed on the Indian Weightlifting Federation.

The IWF made it clear that stern disciplinary actions will be taken against the Indian Federation, which has been a total failure in curbing the doping violation by its lifters.

Legal Counsel for IWF Monika Ungar said the cases of six Indian weightlifters, who were reported for positive dope tests were pending under results management and until all cases are closed there won't be a final decision.

''India has repeatedly produced multiple cases of doping in recent years, but the cases are still open. The executive board shall take a very strong action against the Indian federation once all the cases are closed. Such actions will be made public upon the closure of the last case,'' Ungar said in a statement yesterday.

Earlier this week, the entire executive committee of Indian Weightlifting Federation resigned taking moral responsibility for the repeated doping offences by its lifters.

The doping issue would be discussed today but a final decision will only be made after the doping cases are closed, IWF media spokesman Deszo Dobor said.

The Indian Weightlifting Federation has been banned twice in 2004 and 2006 as there were more than three or more doping violations that came to light.

As per the rules of the world body, if three or more weightlifters from a member nation fail dope tests within a 12-month period, the country is automatically banned for one-year or fined 50,000 dollars.

On one occasion, India had to pay a fine of 25,000 dollars but even after this, a total of eight Indians weightlifters have failed dope tests over the past few months. The list includes some of the top lifters in the country, including Monika Devi and Shailaja Pujari.
