IGNOU's MA in Journalism to get UNESCO certification
New Delhi | Saturday, Nov 21 2009 IST

The Indira Gandhi National Open University will now enable students to get an MA degree in Journalism certified by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation. ''UNESCO would be willing to jointly certify IGNOU's MA course in Journalism and Communications, which is adapted from the model journalism curriculum circulated by UNESCO last year,'' Director of the South Asia office of UNESCO Armoogum Parsuramen announced here today.

He was addressing the gathering at a symposium, inaugurated at the IGNOU campus, on ''Media Education, Challenges and Opportunities'', organised by the School of Journalism and New Media as part of IGNOU's silver jubilee celebrations. Mr Parsuramen said UNESCO was more than willing to help Universities like IGNOU to universalise, spread education, train teachers and upgrade course material. He said, ''I am keen to examine if IGNOU's expertise in distance learning techniques could be adapted and incorporated into UNESCO and model curricula would be introduced in other countries also.

Let us learn from each other.'' IGNOU Vice Chancellor Prof VN Rajasekharan Pillai, who presided over the symposium, noted that IGNOU was one of the first universities in India to adopt UNESCO curricula. ''Much space exists for further cooperation,'' he asserted.

The opening session of the two-day symposium was addressed by eminent academicians from Jawaharlal Nehru University, the Tamil Nadu Open University and leading journalists from various newspapers.
