PM leaves for US, Trinidad and Tobago

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh left here today on a week-long visit to the US and Trinidad and Tobago for talks with the US leadership in Washington and attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meet (CHOGM) at Port of Spain. The Prime Minister, who will arrive in Washington tomorrow will have a stopover tonight in Geneva. He will be in Washington from November 22-26 and attend CHOGM from November 27-29.

He will have talks with US President Barack Obama on November 24 at the White House.

During the visit of Dr Singh to the US, the two countries would sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on counter-terrorism. They will sign MoUs on cooperation in renewable energy, Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) and Agriculture, official sources said here. A Singh-Obama Knowledge Initiative will also be launched, the sources added.

The Prime Minister will be in Washington on a State Visit at the invitation of the US President. This is the first State Visit under the Obama Administration. Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao, briefing reporters on the visit, said the Prime Minister would be given a ceremonial reception at the White House on November 24, after which he would have talks with President Obama.

All the aspects of the Indo-US bilateral relations and the ways to strengthen the India-US Strategic Dialogue will be discussed.

They will also discuss regional and global issues, security situation in India's immediate neighbourhood including Pakistan and Afghanistan, climate change, global economic situation, Non-proliferation, pandemics.
