India PM, Moily, Advani discuss names for new CIC
The meeting between Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha L K Advani and Law Minister M Veerappa Moily held this evening to finalise the name for new Chief Information Commissioner, could not reach any decision. ''There was discussion about several names, but the meeting remained inconclusive,'' according to highly placed sources. The post of CIC fell vacant about a month ago when Wajahat Habibullah quit to head the Information Commission of Jammu and Kashmir on Chief Minister Omar Abdullah's request. Right to Information (RTI) activists from across the country have been demanding that the next CIC be appointed through a transparent and participatory process. The composition of the selection committee has been specified in the Right to Information Act of 2005, but the process like advertising and shortlisting for finalising the name has not been given.
