India SC issues notice to Delhi Govt on plastic ban
The Supreme Court today issued notice to the Delhi Government on a petition challenging the ban imposed on polythene bags in the city. A bench comprising Chief Justice Balakrishnan and Justice J M Panchal decided to consider the issue when senior counsel R F Nariman, counsel for the petitioner, contended that the polythene bags do not damage the city's environment and also not block the drains and gutters. The Government has banned polythene bags on the ground that they badly damage the environment. The petitioner has challenged the validity of the two notifications issued by the Government on the ground that both the notifications were not in conformity with the Central Government laws. -- (UNI) -- 20DI52.xml
