CRY launches campaign for right to education for all
Kolkata | Friday, Nov 20 2009 IST

Child Rights and You(CRY), India's leading NGOs for advocating child rights, today launched its nationwide ''Sabko Shiksha, Samaan Shiksha''(Education for All) campaign to invite people to sign a charter to be sent to the Centre. It used the Centre to make three amendments to the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009.

Addressing a press conference here, CRY's Director Dipankar Mazumder said, '' The upcoming winter session of Parliament is an opportunity to urge the government to amend the Act and make it's provisions truly reachable for each and every child in the country.'' He said, '' The current Act has several gaps which will result in unequal access to this fundamental right for children and by garnering public support for the charter, CRY hopes to bring the government's attention to the need for amendment of the Act.'' The charter will also be sent to the President, Union government ministries and authorities of all the states.

He said, '' We at CRY, as well as our 200 NGO partners which work with 6,700 communities across 18 states, will sign the charter and expect to collect half a million signatures from across the country.'' ''The Centre should allot 10 per cent of the country's GDP for education of children below six years as well as 15 to 18 years. The Centre should also make sure that there is a school with qualified teachers and proper facilities within one km of any habitation,'' he added.
