Hundred per cent EPIC coverage in two years : CEC
Kolkata | Friday, Nov 20 2009 IST

The Election Commission expects to cover hundred per cent electorate in the country with Electronic Photo Identity Cards in less than two years, Chief Election Commissioner Navin Chawla said today.

''So far we have distributed EPIC among 582 million people, covering about 82 per cent of the electorate. We hope to distribute EPIC to hundred per cent of the voting population in less than two years,'' Mr Chawla said during an interaction with the members of the Merchants' Chamber of Commerce.

He said the size of the 714-million strong Indian electorate was larger than those of Africa, Europe, North and South America.

The CEC said Tamil Nadu and Tripura had already achieved 100 per cent EPIC distribution while Rajasthan and Kerala had covered 99 per cent. Even a 'difficult state' like Manipur had achieved about 60 per cent so far, he added.
