BJP not to relent till sugar ordinance is wihdrawn: Venkaiah
Hyderabad | Friday, Nov 20 2009 IST

The Bharatiya Janata Party(BJP) would fight within and outside Parliament till the Sugar(Control)Ordinance, 2009 was withdrawn by the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance(UPA) Government, senior party leader M Venkaiah Naidu, MP, said today.

Talking to newspersons here, Mr Naidu said, the UPA Government at the Centre should not insist on its rigid stand because of false prestige, as the Ordinance was opposed even by its allies like the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam(DMK) and the Trinamool Congress(TC).

The Ordinance was heavily loaded against the interest of cane- growers. While the farm inputs costs had increased six times, the Statutory Minimum Price(SMP), hiked by the Centre over a period, had not increased even three times, he added.

Referring to the November 23 civic elections in the city, the BJP leader alleged that the ruling Congress had failed to prevent Hyderabad from turning into a hub for terrorist activities. Both the Congress and the main opposition party Telugu Desam Party(TDP) were appeasing the 'Majilis' and succumbing to ''vote bank politics, he added.

Mr Naidu claimed that the socio-economic position of Muslims in the BJP-ruled States was far better than in the States ruled by the Congress and cited the example of Gujarat.

He said when the National Democratic Alliance(NDA) Government was in power at the Centre, major infrastructure projects, including the new international airport, metro-rail, upgradation of the Nizam Institute of Medical Sciences(NIMS) had been implemented. The Congress, which was in power in the State for over 50 years and the TDP , which was in power for about 16 years, shoud own responsibility for the lop-sided development in the city with promotion of posh areas on the one hand and mushrooming of slums on the other hand, he added.
