India Camps in schools: HC asks govt to file report in 4 days
Calcutta High Court today pulled up the West Bengal govenment for allowing security forces to set up camps at schools in the tribal-belts dominated by Maoists. A two-judge bench, headed by acting Chief Justice Bhaskar Bhattacharya, directed the government to file a report in four days, stating how many schools were turned into security camps and how long the schools would remain shut for students in the impoverised West Midnapore districts. The court issued the ruling on a public interest litigation filed by Paschim Midnapore Bhumiza Kalyan Samity. The petitioner told the court that more than 20 schools in the district were closed since the security forces moved into the areas to combat the Maoists' menace. ''We wonder how schools can be turned into security camps for an indefinite period in democracy,'' the petitioner said. Advocate General Balai Roy pleaded before the bench that the government was considering seriously to shift the camps out of schools. ''The process has started,'' he assured the court. The case would further come up for hearing next Tuesday. -- (UNI) -- 20CA42.xml
