AIADMK to contest forthcoming bypolls
Chennai | Friday, Nov 20 2009 IST

The opposition AIADMK General Secretary J Jayalalithaa today announced that her pary would contest the forthcoming bypolls to Vandavasi and Thiruchendur assembly constituencies.

''We had boycotted the earlier byelections to register our protest against irregularities at that time. We had not said that we would do so for ever'', Ms Jayalalithaa, who interacted briefly with waiting newspersons during her visit to the party office, said when asked why the party had boycotted the earlier bypolls.

''In fact, we had contested the elections to local bodies after that boycott'', she pointed out.

The Vandavasi assembly seat fell vacant following the demise of sitting DMK member S P Jayachandran, and the Thiruchendur seat following the crossing over of AIADMK member Anitha Radhakrishnan to DMK.

Ms Jayalalithaa strongly criticised the DMK which is a constituent of the UPA government at the Centre for not rising its voice for sugarcane farmers protesting against the Sugarcane control (amendment) order 2009 ordinance.

AIADMK was the first to raise voice against the ordinance. This is another exmple of the DMK playing opportunistic politics, Ms Jayalalithaa said. Her criticism was in response to a question that the PMK was also opposing the ordinance.
