Nervous passenger complains of chest pain, forces flight to return
Chennai | Friday, Nov 20 2009 IST

A Colombo-bound Sri Lankan Airlines flight returned minutes after takeoff when a nervous passenger, undertaking the Haj pilgrimage, complained of chest pain.

The flight carrying 174 passengers, took off at 1040 hrs from the Anna International Airport, only to return to the airport after the passenger, identified as Rafique (58,) complained of severe chest pain. On being informed by the crew, the pilot contacted the Air Traffic Control and brought the flight back to the airport to provide emergency medical care to the passenger.

A medical team, which was rushed to the aircraft, however, found the passenger hale and healty. After check-up, he was declared fit to travel.

Rafique hails from Bangalore and was on his way to Jeddah for Haj pilgrimage. He was travelling with his wife and was supposed to take a flight to Jeddah from Colombo. When the flight was about to take off after the medical team cleared him, the pilot objected to taking the passenger, saying he might create trouble again and he did not wanted to take the risk.

Rafique and his wife, however, refused to disembark, saying they were on a Haj pilgirimage and it would be inauspicious to cut it short. As the pilot stood his ground, the couple had to finally cancel their trip and disembark from the aircraft. After this high drama, the flight took off at 1230 hrs.
