AP to honour Robert Charles Cotton
Hyderabad | Friday, Nov 20 2009 IST

Mr Robert Charles Cotton, great grandson of Sir Arthur Cotton, remembered in Krishna and Godavari delta regions in Andhra Pradesh for major irrigation projects constructed during the British regime, will visit those sites associated with Sir Arthur Cotton from November 26 to December five.

Accompanied by his wife, 84-year-old Robert Charles Cotton would arrive here from London as a State Guest, Major Irrigation Minister P Lakshmaiah told a press conference here.

The British couple, visiting as state guests on the invitation extended by late Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, would visit Iduplapaya to pay tributes to Dr Reddy, who had taken inspiration from Sir Arthur Cotton to take the mamooth irrigation initiative at a whooping Rs 1,75,000 crore, he said.

Sir Arthur Cotton, who had constructed barrages across major rivers-- Godavari and Krishna, is being venerated in the Godavari and Krishna delta regions even today by farmers, pointed out former State Minister M Buddaprasad, who was deputed by the late Chief Minister to locate the descendents of the most-loved Britisher in coastal Andhra. ''With great difficulty and after frantic search we were able to locate Robert Charles Cotton at Henley-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, '' he added.
