India FCCI demands 'Priority Industry' status for Film industry
The two-day FICCI Media and Entertainment Business Conclave which culminated last evening demanded "priority Industry' status for the Film Industry. Apart from seeking priority industry status, the recommendations arrived at by the core committee members of FICCI at the end of the two-day event, included setting up of archives to preserve films of yesteryear. Talking to reporters last evening, Actor and Conclave Chairman Kamal Haasan said the core committee comprising 32 members, including veteran directors K Balachander and Maniratnam and actors Mammootty and Mohanlal, drafted the recommendations based on the two-day extensive deliberations. The recommendations would be given to the Union Government well in time before the 2010-11 General Budget was presented by it. Mr Kamal said the idea behind seeking priority industry status was that it would ensure bank loans at less interest rates for making films. He said the committee also favoured setting up of an archive with governmental support to preserve the films of yesteryear. ''Even several of my own films are facing a slow death as there are no ways to preserve the original copies,'' he added. Setting up of a registry to record copyrights and ownerships for films to avoid legal problems, framing guidelines for different departments for digital production, post production, exhibition and script formatting to standardise the industry were the other recommendations of the core committee. -- (UNI) -- 20MS3.xml
