Landmine explosion derails train; one killed, 25 injured
Kolkata | Friday, Nov 20 2009 IST

Trains continued to be the softest target as the Maoists triggered a landmine explosion last night, derailing eight coaches of 321 Up Tata-Bilaspur Passenger, killing at least one person and injuring 25, five of them seriously, between Posoita and Monoharpur stations on Chakradharpur-Rourkela section of Chakradharpur division.

Official sources said here today that the incident happened at around 2130 hours when train was en route to Bilaspur from Tatanagar.

South Eastern Railway (SER) sources, however, said the cause of the derailment was under investigation.

The driver tried to control the train due to which the damage had been minimised, SER sources stated.

Senior Railway and police officials had rushed to the spot along with medical teams.

While some of the injured were discharged after primary treatment at Monoharpur Primary Health Centre, others were taken to Rourkela for further treatment, the sources added. A pilot engine, however, passed through the site 20 minutes before the incident, sources informed. Several trains had either been diverted or short terminated or cancelled following the accident.
