Spices exports rise in October

The export of spices from India in October 2009 was 41,585 MT valued at Rs 505.74 crore as against 32,650 MT valued at Rs 463.21 crore in the same period last fiscal.

The increase over last year's exports was 27 per cent in quantity and nine per cent in value (14 per cent in dollar terms). Compared to Septmber 2009, the increase during October was substantial at 10 per cent in volume, 16 per cent in value (20 per cent in Dollar terms).

During the period, most of the spices showed a positive trend compared to October 2008. The spices, which had shown substantial increase in exports during the month are cardamom (small), chilli, ginger, turmeric, garlic, nutmeg & mace, curry powder and spice oils and oleoresins. During the month, 200 MT of cardamom (small) valued Rs 14.60 crore were exported as against 50 MT valued at Rs 2.08 crore during October 2008. The export of chillies also registered substantial increase during the month. The exports in October 2009 was 18,500 MT valued at Rs 125.34 crore as against 10,750 MT valued at Rs 68.13 crore during October 2008, an increase of 70 per cent in volume and 84 per cent in rupee value. The export of spice oils & oleoresins during the month increased to 600 MT valued at Rs 62.88 crore from 500 MT valued at Rs 59.10 crore in October 2008. The increase was 20 per cent in volume and six per cent in value, according to an official release here today. The export performance of spices like pepper, cardamom (large), fennel, vanilla and mint products was, however, not upto the expected level.
