DRI sleuths seize 356 gm of heroin, 1270 gm of morphine
Chennai | Thursday, Nov 19 2009 IST

The sleuths of Directorate of Revenue Intelligence have seized 356 gm of heroin and 1,270 gm of morphine from international parcels sent from Chennai and Coimbatore.

According to a press release here today, the parcels were sent through couriers by foreign nationals from major cities in South India.

On intelligence inputs five parcels, sent from the city, were intercepted in a pooling centre of a courier at Chennai on November 17, while another parcel was intercepted at Coimbatore on November 18.

The verification of the documents disclosed that the parcels were sent by foreigners with different addresses of hotels in the city and were consigned to destinations in South Africa and Spain. The articles in the parcels were declared as ladies bags, ladies dresses, shin guards and musice CDs. However, on careful examination it was found that the articles contained narcotic drugs, such as heroin and morphine, in powder form concealed in the sides of the ladies hand bags, in the inner portion of the shin guards and inside the card board covers of the music CDs.

Though efforts made to locate the foreigners at the places mentioned in the documents were futile, one Liberian national who came to book a parcel containing heroin at Coimbatore was arrested.

These drugs, when successfully smuggled out of the country, would have fetched more than Rs 1.5 crore in the international grey market, the release added.
