India Rangarajan envisages 6.5 per cent growth
The Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council Chairman C Rangarajan envisaged the nation registering a economic growth rate of 6.5 per cent during this fiscal year. The decline in growth rate was mainly due to a two-per cent decline anticipated in farm output over the previous year, he said while delivering the Dr Burgula Ramakrishna Memorial lecture at the Osmania University. Indian economy had done well in the recent years, despite the global economic downturn, he noted, adding the country had withstood the economic crisis in the global economic meltdown well to emerge as the second fastest growing economy. He underscored the need for more public spending in infrastructure projects to spur economic growth. However, the country lagged behind in human development index, he said and called for concerted efforts to develop human resources by stepping up spending on public health and education. -- (UNI) -- 19MS55.xml
