Govt to take back coal blocks if not mined within 2 years
Kolkata | Thursday, Nov 19 2009 IST

If the coal block buyers do not start mining activity within two years of purchase, they might be taken back by the government, Union Minister for Power Sushil Kumar Shinde said today.

The Minister was speaking at the Third India Energy Summit, jointly organised by the Ministry of Power, Ministry of New and Renewable Energy and the Indian Chamber of Commerce (ICC) in New Delhi, an ICC communique here said. Mr Shinde reiterated that access to electricity for all households and power demand would be fully met by 2012, as per the National Electricity Policy announced by the Union Government. He attributed the main reasons for delay in commissioning of power projects during the 10th Plan to delay in placement of orders, lack of manufacturing capacity of plants and adequate regulatory controls.

''The development of the transmission network has to go hand-in- hand with generation. The national grid with an inter-regional transfer capacity of 20,750 MW has been established for optimisation of resources and dispersal of power. This inter-regional capacity will be enhanced to more than 32,000 MW by the end of the 11th Plan,'' the Union Minister said, according to the communique.

Investment of Rs 75,000 crore was envisaged in the central sector and Rs 65,000 crore in the state sector for transmission during the 11th Plan, Mr Shinde informed.
