Kite flying costs boy his life, HC upholds ban
Chennai | Thursday, Nov 19 2009 IST

Despite police enforcing a strict ban on flying kites, the craze cost a 14-year-old boy his life at Royapuram Railway Cargo Area in North Chennai late last night. Police said Manikandan, son of a rickshaw puller, attempted to retrieve a kite that got entangled to an electric post when the tragedy occurred.

On seeing the kite atop the electric post, he climbed up the post, came into contact with high tension wire and was thrown off.

He was taken to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital where he died last night.

Royapuram Government Railway Police registered a case and are investigating.

In public interest, the Chennai City police had recently banned flying kites as the thick string coated with glass powder resulted in a spate of mishaps, sometimes fatal, with two-wheeler riders being more vulnerable.

Meanwhile, Madras High Court today upheld the police ban on flying kites.

Dismissing the petition filed by Kite Sellers Associations, the High Court accepted the prosecution plea the ban should not be lifted as it was enforced in public interest. The prosecution also brought to the notice some recent instances in which the necks of two-wheelers riders were cut by the kite strings while travelling.

Accepting the argument, the court dismissed the petition and upheld the ban enforced by the police.
