Law to increase film classification categories in final stage
Chennai | Thursday, Nov 19 2009 IST

A Legislation on certification of films to address the concerns of teenagers by increasing the film classification categories to five from three is on the anvil. Speaking at a session on 'Lobbying for Change: The Role of Trade Bodies and Censorship' at FICCI's Media and Entertainment Business Conclave here today, National Board for Film Certification (NBFC) official Babu Ramaswami said there have been several proposals to increase the classification categories to nine.

''But we have decided to restrict them to five. A draft legislation is in the final stage of preparation. It will then be posed for Parliamentary approval'', he added.

He said if a film gets NBFC certification for the celluloid version, then it would have to seek certification for the digital version. He also pointed out that once a film gets a certificate, it should enjoy unrestricted exhibition all over the country.

Setting the ball rolling, actor Kamal Hassan said cartels existed within the industry which was punishable under the law. The removal of such unfair trade practices was in the interest of the growth of the industry itself, he added. He said the trade bodies and chambers of commerce would have to discuss the issue threadbare to make their members aware of the pitfalls of creation of cartels.
