Cleaner technology should be made by developed nations: Minister
Kolkata | Thursday, Nov 19 2009 IST

The developed countries, primarily responsible for the increase of Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emission, will have to take the responsibility for developing cleaner technology for energy production affordable by the third world.

This was observed here today by state Environment Minister Sailen Sarkar while addressing a seminar on climate change organised by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII).

Mr Sarkar said the Copenhagen Summit must give the highest emphasis on the development of cleaner technologies and find mechanism for its transfer from developed to developing countries under an agreed economic and institutional arrangement.

He said developing countries like India, China and Brazil should not be compelled to cut down their energy production under legal obligation.

''Unless this is achieved, the whole objective of COP 15 in Copenhagen next month will be considered to be a failure of the international community to arrive at a consensus to address the challenges of climate change,'' Mr Sarkar observed.

Referring to post-Aila situation in Sunderbans, he said arsenic contamination of water, air pollution and other negative impacts were being witnessed in the cyclone-affected areas.

Mr Sarkar informed that the state government had urged the Centre to take the required measures, adding a letter had also been written to Union Environment Minister Jairam Ramesh apprising him in detail of the losses.
