Innovation should be collective effort : Prof Balaram
Bangalore | Thursday, Nov 19 2009 IST

Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Director B Balaram today said the need of the hour was to creats an innovative eco-system in academic institutions.

Stressing innovation should be a collective effort, he said ''there is need for creating proper atmosphere and it can be done through collective effort and providing the right kind of ambience.'' Prof Balaram was the Chief Guest at the inauguration of 'Innovate India,' a two-day conference organised by National Research Development Corporation (NRDC) for the first time outside New Delhi. Reflecting on the ''ambience for innovation'' in private R&D institutions, he said ambience was worse than government R&D institutions because of extreme managerial and corporate structure and the hierarchy''.

''Innovation requires the right amount of freedom and right amount of chaos to generate new ideas. There has to be an open door policy as structured environment cannot create innovation,'' he added.

''When we talk about innovation, we must also have an idea where we want to go and how it can be achieved purposefully.'' NRDC Chairman and Managing Director Somenath Ghosh highlighted the need for massive expansion of high quality learning and research system. ''Innovative energy comes from the people. India has 2.5 million people graduating every year out of which 3,50,000 are Engineers. By 2015 there would 1.4 million Engineering Graduates,'' he said.

Observing the centre of gravity of innovation was starting to shift from West to East, Mr Ghosh, quoting a World Bank report, said India can increase its economic productivity by making more efficient use of knowledge.
