India IAP claims 4 lakh lives in India every year
Indoor Air Pollution (IAP), especially in rural India, has emerged as the most lethal killer claiming four lakh lives every year. In its bid to educate people against the ill effects of IAP generated in rural homes due to the use of solid fuel for cooking, Shell Foundation has launched a campaign in 111 villages in Shimoga district of Karnataka to engage people, Foundation Communications Manager Simon Bishop told reporters here today. The Foundation has begun a 90-day campaign to educate people and encourage them to use improvised stoves in Shimoga. This has been taken up as a pilot programme. During the campaign, a woman was appointed in each village with a population of more than 2,000. She would visit households everyday to educate people. ''We are highlighting the ill effects on health of women themselves and their children due to IAP and how they were exposed to pneumonia and chronic bronchitis that may turn fatal. Women spend three to seven hours by the fire and they are exposed to levels of smoke more than 100 times above WHO accepted levels,'' he said. -- (UNI) -- 19MS16.xml
