Directors and artistes seek more government support
Hyderabad | Thursday, Nov 19 2009 IST

Prominent Film directors, writers and artistes today sought more governmental support and patronisation to promote childrens film movement as mainstream directors and producers did not consider children films as commerically viable.

Addresssing a press conference here in connection with the ongoing 16th International Children's Film Festival at Imax threatre, Mr P Chandrasekhar Reddy, director of childrens films like 'Badi Pantulu' and 77 other feature films with late N T Rama Rao and another matinee idol Krishna in lead roles, said there was a need for more official support and promotion for childrens films in the state.

''I am ready to produce two childrens films every year if the government can provide me logistics of publicity besides funding,'' he said.

He said mainstream films were made with the budget of crores of rupees and the producers and directors did not come forward to make children's films because it was not considered to be a profitable venture.

Sri Lankan film maker Somaratne Dissanayake, of 'Saroja' fame, said he started making childrens films as a hobby and to portray the childrens environment in his country. He has produced seven films so far on his return to Sri Lanka after his studies in Australia.

Telugu film lyricist of 'Ganga' and 'Durgi' fame, Andhesree stressed the need to promote films reflecting Telugu culture and traditions as they were accepted by children and also appealed to parents.

However, he said there was need for encouragement by the trade and the government for bringing out more childrens films in regional languages.

Baby Jyotsna, child artiste of 'Durgi', and Preeti Nigam, artiste of childrens film 'Nazrana', also said that the local film industry promoted only artistes from Mumbai rather than locals.

''We are not given chance for audition even locally,'' they added.
