Saurashtra amass 544 for 3 declared, Mahrashtra 53/1 on day two

Riding on the superb performance by its batsmen, Saurashtra posted a mammoth 544 for three declared in their first innings and in reply Mahrashtra scored 53 for one on the second day of their four-day Ranji Trophy Super League match here today.

After recuperating from a knee injury, prolific batsman Cheteshwar Pujara hit an unbeaten double ton (204*) while Shitanshu Kotak (103) and Ravindra Jadeja (122*) slammed centuries.

Pujara partnered Sitanshu Kotak (103) for the third wicket and put on 132 runs between them before the latter was bowled by medium pacer S fallah. The unbroken fourth-wicket stand of 272 runs between Cheteshwar Pujara and Ravindra Jadeja helped the Captain Jaydev Shah to declare the innings after completion of the double ton by Pujara.

On a docile wicket, Saurashtra batsmen played at their will and hit the loose deliveries all around the grounds. Mahrashtra bowlers were unimpressive on a docile wicket and could manage to take only one wicket today in the form of old horse Sitanshu Kotak, but not before he completed the ton.

Sitanshu added another 18 runs to his kitty from his overnight score of 85 and immediately after his coveted mark was bowled by seamer S Fallah. Sitanshu's innings was studded with eleven fours while facing 272 balls and stayed at the pitch for 382 minutes.

Pujara had scored his third triple century (302 not out) last year in the ranji match against Orissa.

After blasting 386 in the second week of October last year in an under-22 match against Maharashtra, the 21-year-old bettered it by cracking 309 in a single day at Rajkot in under-22 CK Naidu cricket match in October last year.

Jadeja, who joined the team in second match, after completing his duty from Team India, kept his form alive and hit chanceless unbeaten 122 in which he executed seven fours and three towering sixes.

Harshad Khadiwale, the Maharashtra captain, who batted with ease was run out by direct throw from mid-on by Kamlesh Makwana.

He went back after making 22 runs. Rohan Bhosale and S Atitkar were batting with 25 and one respectively when stumps were drawn. BRIEF SCORES: Saurashtra: Ist Innings 544 for three declared in 160 overs.

Mahrashtra: Ist Innings 53 for 1.
