Salt Lake Stadium barred from hosting commercial function
Kolkata | Wednesday, Nov 18 2009 IST

No commercial programmes would henceforth be allowed at the Salt Lake Stadium which would only be utilised for sports events, West Bengal sports minister Kanti Ganguly said today.

Talking to mediapersons at Writers' Buildings, the Minister said the stadium had been implanted with polygrass, suitable for football and other sports, and organising any other events would damage it.

He, however, said in case of any ''national cause,'' like natural calamities, the venue might be used for raising funds.

Mr Ganguly also said permission would not be given from now on for organising fairs and other functions at Kshudiram Indoor Stadium, adjacent to Netaji Indoor Stadium, which would also be kept reserved only for sports activities.

Incidentally, music maestro A R Rahaman had performed at the Yuva Bharati Krirangan on November 14, an initiative of Liver Foundation (West Bengal).

To a query on whether the decision of reserving the Salt Lake Stadium only for sports was taken after the show because of any damage to the field, Mr Ganguly observed '' My department is not aware of any damage to the stadium because of the programme.

Furthermore, permission for hosting the function had been given three months back by the previous Sports Ministry and advance payment had also been made by the Liver Foundation.''
