ONGC stepped up security post 26/11: Sharma

ONGC had considerably stepped up the security surveillance of its offshore and onshore installations post the 26/11 terrorist attack on Mumbai, ONGC Chairman R S Sharma today said.

Speaking to newsmen after a review of safety and security issues relating to the petroleum major, Mr Sharma, however, declined comment on the details of the security arrangements as they were confidential in nature. He said the company had put up electronic surveillance in its platforms and was putting up similar gadets on its onshore units also. The security had been put in place incorporation with the coast guard and Indian navy, and ONGC had also offered speed boats to coast guard, he added.

Mr Sharma said ONGC had sought the government to declare a five nautical mile radius around the off shore installations as designated areas to avoid entry of those other than ONGC.

He said safety measures had been stepped up considerably since 2000 when insurance companies criticised the safety norms of ONGC, and said that today the Company was praised by foreign underwriters for putting in place safety measures that were comparable to foreign oil installations. He mentioned the elaborate follow ups being taken up for safety of the installations.

In fact, during the recent Jaipur IOC Depot fire, ONGC had taken rapid action to ensure its reaction and fire fighting forces from Mesana in Gujarat was rushed to Jaipur at the earliest. Within an hour after he was alerted by the Rajasthan Authorities, his team was on the road, he added.

Mr Sharma said the company on an average spends around Rs 400 crore a year on safety issues. These included replacements and revamping of components, he added.
