India Restoration works going in full swing
Restoration works on the Nilgiris Mountain Railways, which was extensively damaged due to landslips triggerred by heavy rains, was going in full swing. A press release from the Salem Division of the Southern Railway said due to heavy rains extensive damage was caused to NMR by way of landslips and breaches. The restoration work has been taken up in full swing on the 38 km stretch from Kallar to Ooty. More than 250 railway staff and contractual labourers with machineries were engaged in the restoration work. Earth moving machines, four Poclain machines and two JCB machines were also engaged in restoration work. Work is also going on in a place where a breach of about 35 metres in length occurred near Aravankadu railway station. One Divisional Engineer, two Assistant Divisional Engineers, and one Assistant Divisional Mechanical Engineer have been posted exclusively for the restoration work at the NMR. The 38 km stretch line has been divided into three sections and restoration works were going on simultaneously in all the sections. In the first stretch, a 10 km section between Kallar and Bridge No.66, progress has been made for about four kms from Kallar. In this section, 172 cubic metres of mud and rock from the landslips have been removed from the track at nine locations. About 220 cubic metres of mud and rock have been removed from three locations on the second stretch between Bridge No.66 to Coonoor and in the third stretch of 15 km between Coonoor and Ooty, 1220 cubic metres of mud and rock have been removed from nine locations. The total earthwork that needs to be removed works out to nearly 30,000 cubic metres. So far, 21 locations have been cleared out of the total 111 locations identified. -- (UNI) -- 18MS59.xml
