Tension at airport as passenger throws tantrums
Chennai | Wednesday, Nov 18 2009 IST

Tension prevailed at the Chennai Airport here this morning when a passenger scheduled to board a Jet Airways flight to Kochi threw tantrums during a security check and ran towards the runway as securitymen overpowered him.

Airport sources said R Sarfuddin (30), a native of Kozhikode, had come from Abu Dhabi to board the Chennai-Kochi Jet Airways Flight scheduled for departure at 0645 hrs.

During security check, Sarfuddin shouted at the personnel on duty and after throwing his ticket and boarding pass ran towards the runway throwing CISF men into a tizzy.

The CISF men caught Sarfuddin after a hot chase and whisked him away to a room where he was interrogated on suspicion of being a terrorist.

They also questioned his co-passenger, a native of Kochi, who was on the same flight from Abu Dhabi.

The passenger said Sarfuddin seemed mentally-disturbed on losing his job at an iron factory where he had worked for two years.

A medical team which examined him also concurred with the co-passenger's theory.

Finally, the authorities decided to release him. However, he was not allowed to board the Jet Airways Flight.

The co-passenger offered to take him home on train after cancelling his ticket. He took Sarfuddin to a private hospital near the airport where he was treated as outpatient.
