Minister calls for debate
Chennai | Wednesday, Nov 18 2009 IST

Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Ambika Soni today called for a debate to put in place a mechanism to address the competing priorities of the right of Media and Industry to freedom of speech and expression and right and sensitivities of the civil society.

Inaugurating the two-day Entertainment and Media Business Conclave here, she recalled television had come a long way and became a very big industry.

''Over 500 TV channels have commissioned to enter our homes across length and breath of India. ''When there is such an invasion into all our homes and rooms, naturally there is an ongoing debate in this country,'' she said.

Observing people's representatives, who were answerable to Parliament and State Legislatures, respect Sec 19 of the Indian Constitution guaranteeing freedom of speech and expression, she said ''we have to have a debate on what is good, what will be too much and what can be carried on.'' Neither Censorship nor self-regulation was the best part, the Minister said adding ''But we, as citizens of this country, have to decide on having some mechanism that would address the issues of right of Media and Industry to freedom of speech and expression and right and sensitivities of the civil society.
