K'taka to privatise power distribution system: minister
Bangalore | Wednesday, Nov 18 2009 IST

The Karnataka government will seriously pursue privatisation of power distribution as part of the second stage of its power distribution reforms programme launched last year, Energy Minister K S Ishwarappa said today.

Speaking at the CII conference on 'Karnataka Power-2009', he said both Union and State Governments regarded bringing reforms in distribution system as key to reforming the energy sector as a whole.

''Introduction of private sector in power distribution will help us achieve improved operating efficiency, capital investment efficiency and financial stability to the sector,'' he said, adding all concerns of private investors would be addressed and certain pre-conditions reiterated by them would be satisfied in the near and medium term to make power distribution a viable investment opportunity.

As part of developing and efficient power sector, the Government was also considering an appropriate wholesale electricity trading arrangement, he said.
