SC permits Sanjay Dutt to go abroad for shooting

The Supreme Court today permitted Bollywood actor and Samajwadi Party General Secretary Sanjay Dutt to go abroad to complete his shooting assignments.

Sanjay Dutt is on bail in the 1993 Mumbai serial bomb blast case and as per the conditions imposed by the Supreme Court in the bail order, he cannot leave the country without prior permission of the apex court.

Dutt was sentenced to six years imprisonment by the Mumbai TADA Court for an offence under the Arms Act though he was given a clean chit in the terrorist conspiracy which culminated in a series of bomb blasts in Mumbai on March 12, 1993 leaving more than 200 dead and several hundreds injured.

Dutt was not allowed by the Supreme Court to contest Lok Sabha elections this year because under the representation of the People' s Act, a person who has been awarded a sentence of more than two years cannot contest elections unless and until the conviction is stayed by the appellate court.

A bench headed by Chief Justice K G Balakrishnan directed Dutt to return his passport to the authorities latest by May 31, 2010 before which he has to return to India.
