Germany to fund 8 million euros for fostering friendship

Germany will invest eight million euros in India to foster the bond of friendship between the two nations, President of Goethe-Institute, Munich, Professor Klaus-Dieter Lehmann, today said.

Addressing a news conference to mark 50 years of Goethe-Institute in India, Prof Lehmann here said under the project ''Germany in India'', Max Mueller Bhawan, Germany's foreign office and corporate sectors would raise eight million euros to fund various educational and cultural projects in India until 2012.

Prof Lehmann said Germany had recognised India's richness of culture, heritage, tradition and its friendship towards his country for the past fifty years.

He said Goethe-Institute would work towards fostering ties between the two nations, use its resources for the upbringing of cultural ties and make efforts to collaborate with the Indian insitutions for spreading German language.

Goethe-Institue/Max Mueller Bhawan also announced their 50 years celebration of operation in India that was being organised in New Delhi, Bangalore, Chennai, Mumbai, Pune and Kolkata during winter and spring 2009-10.

Prof Lehmann said a grant of Rs 60 lakh was also earmarked where proposals must show a reference to Germany, or German culture such as music, dance, theatre, film, literatrue, fine arts and new media.

Goethe-Institute and Max Mueller Bhawan have identified 45 schools in India to collaborate with them to for the learning of German langauge.

''It is a proud moment for all of us since we have complete 50 years of operations in India. This milestone makes a mark in our inter-cultural relations with India. It is largely due to the faith and harmony between the two nations. During the past 50 years of our presence in this country, we have nurtured long-term partnerships with cultural institutions and shall continue to assist in upgrading cultrual infrastructure in the country,'' Prof Lehmann said.

The celebrations in the city was marked by a symposium ''From Old to Gold: Making Heritage Work'', in which speakers explored the issues on whether the abundant architectural heritage of the city was being used to its full potential. It was also discussed weather the heritage buildings were actually earning their upkeep.
