India Nuclear power plant not to be set up against people's wish: Kakodkar
Atomic Energy Commission Chairman Anil Kakodkar today said the proposed nuclear power plant at Haripur in West Bengal's East Midnapore district would not be set up against the wish of the people. ''We will try to get the problem solved amicably. But nothing will be done against the people's wishes. If they do not want the plant, it won't come up,'' he told reporters after inaugurating the Atomic Energy Department's 26th Safety and Occupational Health Profesionals Meet at the Variable Energy Cyclontron Centre. Mr Kakodkar, however, said the DoAE was moving through ''proper channels'' to implement the Haripur project and talks would be held with the West Bengal government, the local civic authorities, the people and other stakeholders before arriving at any final decision. Former VECC director Bikash Sinha, who looks into the technical feasibility of the project, said a plan was being considered to give land donors some stake in the project. The Centre had proposed to set up coastal nuclear power plants at Haripur, Berhampore in Orissa, Mithirvirdi in Gujarat and Kowada in Andhra Pradesh. -- (UNI) -- 16CA45.xml
