Gurdaspur overall champs in Punjab Rural Games

Gurdaspur bagged the overall trophy by securing 18 points on the final day of Punjab State Rural Games for Boys Under-18 at R K Arya College here today. Ludhiana secured second place with a difference of one points (17). Sangrur got the third place with 15 points. Dr Daljit Singh Cheema, Chief Adviser to Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal, was the chief guest and gave away prizes to the winners. The March Past Trophy went to Mansa District.

Speaking on the occasion Dr Cheema praised the policies of the Punjab Sports Department for the upliftment of sports in the state and expressed his full satisfaction on the working of the department for the last three years and expected good results in near future.

Earlier, Padma Shree Pargat Singh, Director Sports, welcomed the chief guest and other guests present on the occasion. He also informed that these games were purely for the rural players and informed the policies of the Department for the upliftment of sports in the state. Other guests were present on the occasion were Assistant Director S L Lotey and Deputy Director Sports Hazari Lal Sharma.

Hoshisrpur outplayed Gurdaspur by 2-0 goals in the one-sided football final match. Both goals were scored for Hoshiarpur by Gagandeep Singh in the second half. Mansa got third place who defeated Kapurthala by 3-2 in tie-breaker session.

In basketball Ferozepur got first place by defeating Patiala by 71-64 whereas for the third/fourth place Gurdaspur defeated Sangrur by 50-32.

Ludhiana on the volleyball after defeating Sangrur well fought four games 25-18, 25-20, 25-16. Jalandhar won the third place by defeating Gurdaspur 25-22,25-21.

In hockey final, as expected Jalandhar outplayed Moga by 4-0.

Ropar defeated Hoshiarpur by 8-0 goals to decide the third and fourth positions. In an interesting kabaddi final Gurdaspur defeated Ludhiana by 26-24. Amritsar and Barnala were declared joint third.

Amritsar won the overall wrestling championships with 22.5 points. Faridkot got second place by pocketing 21 points whereas Gurdaspur won the third place with 10.5 points.

Ludhiana emerged handball champions by defeating Patiala by 18-17 in an interesting final match. Sangrur finished third after they defeated Faridkot 16-13.

Amritsar won the overall weightlifting championships with 20 points, Ropar got second place with 16 points and Ludhiana were third with 14 points.
