Tendulkar, Kapil are icons without any doubt: Azad
Patiala | Sunday, Nov 15 2009 IST

''Sachin Tendulkar has been dear to God like Kapil Dev. God helped both of them to be great masters in cricket.

Both of them became great through hard work, devotion and unrelenting labour,'' says Desh Prem Azad, who was instrumental in coaching Kapil Dev, Chetan Sharma, Ashok Malhotra and a few other top notch players.

Comparing Sachin Tendulkar with Kapil Dev in terms of physical fitness, Azad says during Kapil Dev's time there were no gym., no bowling coach, no fielding coach, no physio, no specialized doctor, and still Kapil Dev's physical fitness was matchless. Now Sachin Tendulkar has the facilities in the world to keep himself physically fit.

However, both are icons without any doubt. Today, both are unparalleled in the history of cricket.

''I salute Sachin Tendulkar as I find him full of humility. He is down-to-earth, a very humble man. I am so unfortunate not to have ever met him, though I met his coach, Ramakant Achrekar, who too was very humble person. May be I get a chance to meet Sachin Tendulkar one day,'' Azad told UNI.

Talking about Sachin Tendukar's retirement, Azad says that he should retire when he is in the thick of making runs instead of retiring when he is on the decline. He will then command respect all over the world and for all time to come.
