Karnataka on course for victory over Delhi
New Delhi | Thursday, Nov 12 2009 IST

Karnataka fought back well to wrest the advantage despite a gritty century from opener Shikhar Dhawan as Delhi was staring defeat at 255 for nine on the third day of the Group B match of Ranji Trophy Super League here today.

At the draw of stumps, Delhi were leading by 149 runs with just one wicket in hand and a day to spare.

It was a 135-run stand between Dhawan and Rajat Bhatia (64) for the third wicket which pulled the hosts out of trouble but there was hardly any contribution from the lower order.

Dhawan was determined to play a long innings and struck a patient 180-ball 100 which finally came to an end with a run out.

The poor show in the first innings by the Delhi batsmen when they crumbled for just 154 would come haunting if they lose from here as the advantage lies with the visitors.

However, the weather could prove to play a spoilsport for Karnataka who have been more authoritative in the match so far.

Resuming at overnight score of 93 for 2, Dhawan and Bhatia showed great maturity and batted with patience to take the team score past the 150-run mark. But as the duo was dismissed, the batting started to crumble and Vinay Kumar and Sreenath Arvind ran through the lower order.

While Kumar grabbed three wickets to take his match tally to 11 wickets, Arvind picked up four for 39 in his 19 overs.

Abhishek Sharma (34) was the lone batsman in the lower order who made a substantial contribution but he hardly got support from the other end.
