India CMRI to hold 'walkathon' to generate awareness about diabetes
Calcutta Medical Research Institute(CMRI) in association with several organisations, will host the city's first ever 'walkathon' on November 15 to generate awareness about diabetes. Addressing the media, CMRI General Manager Rupak Barua here today said, ''Diabetes is a silent killer and if people do not change their lifestyles, the disease would spread throughout the country.'' The 'walkathon' will start from the main gate of the Victoria Memorial at 0700 hrs and it would be led by the Kolkata Police band . Commissioner of Police Goutam Mohan Chakraborty would flag off the programme. Mr Barua said 36 million people were currently suffering from diabetes throughout the country. ''In a statement recently issued by the World Health Organisation (WHO), 50.8 million people would affected by this disease by 2010 and the picture will even grimmer in 2025, as India is all set to earn the inglorious epithet of being the world capital of diabetes,'' he added. National Insurance Company(NIC) General Manager K Singh said, ''Diabetes is a killer disease and we should unitedly think how to combat the ailment. Later, he announced, in presence of additional Commissioner of Police Debashis Roy, that the NIC would donate Rs 50,000 to the Kolkata police for the needy cops who were suffering from diabetes. Event Management Group(EMG) Country Head Krishnendu Banik said, ''We hope to make walkathon an annual event in Kolkata with a view to creating an overwhelming awareness about the perils of diabetes and methods to manage and contain.'' -- (UNI) -- 11CA42.xml
