India India keen to sign FTA with GCC: Tharoor
Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor today expressed India's willingness to sign a Free Trade Agreement (FTA) with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries, but said there was more action needed from the other side. The Minister was replying to a question at the India Economic Summit here, where he took part in a panel discussion on the theme 'Global Redesign: How Will India Shape Future Global Cooperation?'. The Minister was replying to a question as to why India was hesitant in signing the FTA with the GCC. He said this was not the case and put the ball in the court of the GCC, saying more action was needed from their side. Nevertheless, Mr Tharoor said negotiations have been going on for the last two years, which was a long enough time for the ice to break. GCC countries comprise Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, the United Arab Emirates and the Sultanate of Oman. Founded on May 1981, the aim of the GCC is to promote coordination between member states in all fields in order to achieve unity. -- (UNI) -- 10DI32.xml
