Indian team embarrassed its fans, says Gavaskar
New Delhi | Monday, Nov 9 2009 IST

Former captain Sunil Gavaskar launched a scathing attack on the Indian team for its poor performance in Guwahati against Australia and did not give the home team any chance to salvage pride in the last one-dayer in Mumbai. India went down tamely in the sixth one-day international by six wickets yesterday to give Australia an unassailable 4-2 lead.

Gavaskar said the hosts needed to put up a much better show in front of the Guwahati crowd who do not get to see their stars that often.

However, he claimed that he wasn't much surprised with the result of the match in Guwahati as for him the loss in Mohali was more shocking for the home side.

''I was more disappointed with the Mohali defeat than this one. Today I wasn't too surprised at how well the Australians regrouped after their win in Hyderabad. ''I think the team embarrased the fans today. They certainly deserved more, there aren't too many matches played here,'' said the former Indian opener.

Gavaskar, who is also a part of the commentary team for the seven-match series, further added that that it would be difficult for the Indians to make it 3-4 in Mumbai on Wednesday.

''I just get the feeling that Australia are now just psychologically so much better that India will have a real fight on their hands,'' Gavaskar told 'CNN-IBN' on Sunny Side Up.

The legendary batsman also believes that the World Cup needs to be the focus for the Indian team which should not disappoint the home fans when the event comes here in 2011.

''It is in our country and it is really huge so India needs to pick itself up to have a sembelance of a chance. ''For the World cup pressure will be enoromous as we are playing at home. We have to win every game. That is why you need guys who will be able to cope with that pressure, which means you need experienced guys in your team,'' he stressed. The 60-year-old former opener was also critical for the youngsters who do not pay much attention on the domestic circuit and put it as one of the reasons why India couldn't perform well against a depleted Australian team.

''Youngsters need to get experience from domestic cricket. They need to play a lot more on domestic level. ''The only exception I will make is with a quick bowlers. Otherwise, they need to play atleast 3 seasons of domestic cricket before they are taken into the India eleven,'' he suggested.
