New Delhi | Sunday, Nov 8 2009 IST

Expressing its keen interest in expanding its footprint across India, retail giant Wal-Mart Stores Inc has apprised the Indian government about its plans to open 40 new stores stores in the sub-continent in the immediate future, Commerce and Industry Minister Anand Sharma said here today.

WalMart Chairman S Robson Walton had met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and Mr Sharma on November 6.

''Wal-Mart is very satisfied with the results here (in India). I was informed by Mr Walton that they are looking at opening more stores. He gave a figure of 40 more stores across the country in the immediate future,'' Mr Sharma told reporters here on the sidelines of India Economic Summit, organised by CII.

Wal-Mart is present in India through a cash-and-carry joint venture with Bharti Group.
