CPI(ML) objects EC decision to relocate 516 booths in Jharkand
New Delhi | Saturday, Nov 7 2009 IST

The CPI(ML), in a letter written to the CEC, has strongly objected to the decision of the Election Commission(EC) to relocate 516 polling booths in Jharkhand during the upcoming Assembly elections.

Prabhat Kumar of Central Committee, CPI(ML), in a statement here today, said, ''in the name of relocating polling booths from sensitive areas, the total number of polling booths may be reduced.

Even if the number of booths remains the same, the booths will be centralised and clustered together rather than spread out close to the voters' places of residence.'' ''This will inevitably hamper easy access of voters to polling booths. Easy access to the polling booth near the place of residence is a crucial principle and precondition for the right to vote, '' he said.

'' Voters will have to travel far from their places of residence to exercise their franchise. This will create problem of safe transport of voters, as well as possible temporary shelter for voters at a place far from their homes,'' he added.

The CPI(ML) has strongly demanded that the unwarranted and counter-productive decision to relocate booths be revoked forthwith.
