Parasaran to appear for AP Govt in Babli contempt case

Senior Counsel K Parasaran will appear for Andhra Pradesh government on November 12 in the contempt petition filed against Maharashtra for fixing gates to the Babli project, across the river Godavari, allegedly against the interim direction of the Supreme Court.

Talking to reporters here after a review meeting with officials on the inter-state disputes, Major Irrigation Minister P Lakshmaiah said the original suit would also come up for hearing before the apex court on that day. The state government has also finalised its strategy for countering Mahrashtra's arguments before the Brijesh Mishra inter-state Water Tribunal on sharing of Krishna waters, starting next week, he said, adding Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh had already presented their arguments before the tribunal. Admitting ''there are some delays in the settlement of bills to contractors'', he said this had to be understood in the context of global financial meltdown. He said there was no need for apprehensions on implementation of major irrigation projects. The government has accorded top priority to ''Jalayagnam'', the brainchild of late Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhara Reddy as completion of this project would be a ''real tribute'' to him.

Bills for Rs 3,700 crore were pending since April/May and they would be cleared on priority basis, he said.

The meeting also decided to speed up the ongoing modernisation works in the Godavari Delta at a cost of Rs 1,061 crore and called for tenders for another 48 packages worth Rs 2,100 crore, he added.
