MoS for Tourism urges PM to intervene in AMU disturbances
New Delhi | Saturday, Nov 7 2009 IST

Minister of State for Tourism, Sultan Ahmed, today requested Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and HRD Minister Kapil Sibal to initiate a high-level probe into the ongoing disturbances in Aligarh Muslim University (AMU).

Demanding the re-opening of the University, hundreds of AMU students have been demonstrating at Jantar Mantar here and were joined by the students of Jamia Milia Islamia and Jawaharlal Nehru University.

Mr Ahmed met with the demonstrating students this morning and asserted his support to the cause.

''The University authorities pulled the shutters down and with the help of the district administration, they also arranged for special buses to take students back to their home towns and villages. Such a macabre instance of clearing the decks with amazing alacrity following a gruesome murder has rarely been heard of in the history of democratic India,'' said Mr Ahmed in a press statement today.

The varsity is closed since October 30 following the murder of a BSc first year student on October 25 outside the premises of the AMU.
