Low pressure brings more rain to AP, Govt. on alert

Rains lashed South Andhra Pradesh as the well-marked low pressure area over comorin area persisted, even as the state Government geared up its machinery in four districts to save human lives and property. Indian Meteorological Department predicted heavy rains over south coastal Andhra Pradesh as the system was likely to concentrate into a depression in the next two or three days moving in a north-north-westerly direction. Reviewing the situation with officials from New Delhi, Chief Minister K Rosaia directed the collectors of Nellore, Prakasam, Chitoor and Kadapa districts to maintain round the clock vigil to save human lives and property.

Disaster Management Commissioner Balasubrahmanyam informed the officers that two breeches had occurred at Kota-Sullurpeta Road and Dagadarthi-Buchchireddypalem Road. Nellore district colletor was directed to restore vehicular traffic immediately on these two roads.

One causeway wash washed away in Jaladanki Mandal which received 22 cm of rain yesterday. All the 46 mandals in Nellore received heavy rains. 39 out of 56 mandals in Prakasam, 47 out of 66 mandals in Chittoor and 23 out of 51 mandals in Kadapa received good rains. The North East monsoon was vigorous over South Coastal Andhra Pradesh. Rain occurred at a few places over North Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema, while it was isolated over Telangana.

Kavali recorded extremely heavy rainfall of 25 cm, while Gudur town in Nellore district, recorded 13 cm, followed by Sullurpet 12 , Tada 11, Nellore town, Kandukur (Prakasam dist), Rapur and Vinjamur (both Nellore dist), Srikalahasti (Chittoor dist) 9 each, Visakhapatnam 8, Atmakur and Venkatagiri Town (both Nellore dist) 7 each. Heavy rainfall was likely at a few places with isolated very heavy rain in the districts of Nellore, Prakasam, Guntur and Krishna in coastal Andhra Pradesh, during next 48 hours. Isolated heavy rain is likely to occur in Chittoor district and Kadapa in Rayalaseema district during the same period.
