RBI official wife arrested for 'torturing' maid
Kolkata | Saturday, Nov 7 2009 IST

Police today arrested a high official of Reserve Bank of India and his wife allegedly for torturing their maid, who was hospitalised in a critical condition.

Manjari Naik, the 15-year-old maid was allegedly denied food and water for two days and kept confined in a room of the couple's flat in the city's Alipore area. She later managed to escape on Thursday night by climbing down a rainwater pipe, police said.

The caretaker of the housing complex, who gave the girl shelter for the night, accompanied her to the police station yesterday. The girl lodged a complaint with police against RBI Deputy General Manager Sriprakash Mishra and his wife for their alleged ill-treatment meted out to her.

The girl was then rushed to the Calcutta Medical Research Institute's high dependency unit (HDU).
