Ashok Chavan follows footsteps of father Shankarrao Chavan
Mumbai | Saturday, Nov 7 2009 IST

Emulating his father and former chief minister late Shankarao Chavan, 52-year-old Ashok Chavan today took over the reigns of Maharashtra for a second term, heading the Congress-Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) Ministry which was sworn in by Governor S C Jamir for a third term.

Chavan took the oath for the second time in less than a year after spearheading the hattrick success of the alliance at the hustings in the October 13 elections, in which the two parties won 144 of the 288 seats.

Without blinking an eye-lid, Congress supremo Sonia Gandhi picked Chavan to continue to head the alliance rewarding his twin success at the hustings -- first in Lok Sabha elections and then the Assembly elections.

Chavan has joined the rank of leaders such as his father Shankarrao Chavan, Sharad Pawar, Vilasrao Deshmukh, Vasantdada Patil, who led the state as Chief Minister more than once.

Shankarrao and Ashok Chavan is the first father-son duo to lead the state as Chief Minister.

Born on October 28, 1958, Chavan, son of Congress stalwart and former Union Home Minister late Shankarrao Chavan, is considered as one of the most modest and senior leaders of the party from Marathwada region. Just like his father, he is also known for loyalty to the party and the Gandhi family.
